There has been some concern about the wood chips put down at the dog park. One dog that I know got one impacted in his paw and it caused serious infection. Other dogs have difficulty walking on them when they are first put down. Some owners feel that their dogs have developed allergies to them. Has any thought been given to using alternative covering? Apparently years past mulch was used. Is there any specific reason why this was discontinued?
Our board meetings are held every 2nd Tuesday of the month. My suggestion is to attend one of the meetings with this and any other questions or concerns you may have.
When we started with the chips the parks dept. did extensive research and it was determined that what we use is the best. We have never used mulch because you never know where it comes from and whether or not it has had pesticides or other chemicals used on what was chopped up. The chips are Redwood and sterile. In the past we have tried to grow grass but with the high useage of the park it never lasted more that a month not to mention that the soil at the park is so bad that nothing grows. Also it was a landfill so that accounts for hard compacted soil.
To those of you that have concerns over the wood chips used in the dog park, please bring these concerns and other questions to one of our monthly board meetings. They are held the second Tuesday of each month. See original post for location and time.
Thank you,
The Board.
